1900-1910 HISTORY

Finally, in 1904, cars began to appear: Cadillacs, Ramblers, Franklins. The roads were paved in1909.

Hallett House burned down in 1905, the Port View Hotel burned in 1909.

Thomas Taggart bought the property along the waterfront between the pier and the break water in 1909 to build his large house on the point. The house on that site was moved up the street to where the Hinckley livery stables were formerly located. He later built his house for his youngest daughter (Emily and Dick Sinclair) on the site of the burned down Port View Hotel.

The Hyannis Port Yacht Club was founded in 1909.

The old cat boats were no longer as popular when families could drive places. Going for ice cream in Osterville was a favorite with children.

In 1899, gas lighting had been installed at the Holbrook house. Dr Herrick had already installed the first gas at his house shortly before. Tragedy struck on Labor Day night in 1910 when the Holbrooks house burned to the ground. the Tower survived.

By 1907, W.Y Humphreys had purchased Squaw Island. Look at the pages below of he the testimony of two old residents about the evolution of the marshes around Swa=uaw island as Mr Humpghreys was trying to determine the bounds of the property. IN 1907, Mr Humphreys built Indian Rock House.

Construction began on the top of Sunset Hill to build St Andrew's- by- the -Sea. The land was donated by Mrs Whittimore after her husband died.

Next door, the Finkenstaedt family built their house in 1902.

The West Beach Club Bathing Company was founded 1916

The Stoneleigh Gables Hotel was built in 1913 on Irving Ave.

In 1902, the Finkenstaedt family built a large house near the top of Suset hill.
